TEXTURE
Statement of intent
What is the theme?
The theme we are looking into is texture. In my opinion texture is an imaginative, expressive and artistic theme. It is an important theme to research because it can bring out the vibrancy in a photo you may originally have seen as dull or boring. Texture brings patterns, colours and depth which I think will be interesting to capture. I especially want to show this in close up images, maybe of fruit or vegetables, for example, the pattern of something like a lettuce and it's veins. I also intend to take close- ups of manmade textures as you can zoom in the texture of something like metals, bricks and plastic which will be a good contrast to the natural textures I will be taking. I intend to explore different lighting because this is important as a photographer to develop your skills and I will do this by setting-up studio lighting as well as capturing the natural light on location shoots. , I have built my own Weebly website where you can easily add your own images. I like this website because you can add text to your photos and say what's good about an image and what you think you could improve on and my work will be presented in a very professional way.
Which artists/photographers are you going to research and why?
The three photographers I am starting to look into are, Galen Rowell, Edward Weston, Aaron Sisking.
I chose Galen Rowell because he uses lots of colours in his nature photos, for example, he captures deep blue seas and vibrant green leaves in forests, he uses different angles which I think really bring his images to life.
I will also look at Edward Weston because he really pays attention to the details of a texture and takes adequate images of the patterns in shells, cabbages etc. Another thing is that he uses black and white photography which is creative because instead of focusing on the colour you are focusing on the details of his images (the leading lines).
I will choose Aaron Sisking because he is famously well known for his texture photography. He would usually take close- up images of bark and wood because they were flat, he wanted to focus on the details of things and make them look more 3D. I think this catches the attention of the viewer and is inspiring, I hope to incorporate some of his work into mine.
From their work, I want to think about the photos I am taking carefully and consider angles and lighting that might bring out the best in my photos. Hopefully, researching these artists will awaken my own style of photography and inspire my final outcomes.
What will you do for your initial research?
My first thoughts on texture, I think I would prefer to take photos of natural textures rather than man- made ones as the bright colours of fruit and plants stand out to me and show creativity, however I think taking photos of both shows a good contrast and variety of images. For my research, I will start by getting inspiration from other previous students' Weebly websites. I intend to start here because they were the ones who achieved the high grades and knew what they were doing, which is what I hope to accomplish. Another place to look for inspiration could be Pinterest because you can make boards of objects easily. For example, a natural mood board of leaves and maybe a manmade mood board of metals and cogs. I will show the influence of these photos and refer back to them but also show my own style of taking pictures. After I have looked into the previous pupils' techniques and found my inspiration I will research photoshop effects that may be similar to what they have used. This is because our theme is texture and I'd hope to find creative tools that will make my natural and manmade textures stand out and compliment them. To display my inspiration, I set out to create two mood boards showing my favourite man-made and also natural textures. To add more detail to my work, I am going to create a Coggle mind map. This is a good starting point as you are already understanding how to take a good photo showing textures and inspires you.
Starting point?
When I started photography I knew little about it other than that I liked taking photos on an old camera I had.To show progression in my work I will take my own images at home or places I go to around Manchester. For example, photos of the sky, trees, or the city. To display these on my website I will create galleries. This shows progression because it shows I am trying to be independent with my work because at the start, you only take photos with school. I aim to organise my website effectively by splitting it into natural and manmade textures including the best and worst. Best and worst shows progression if you work on what you may have made mistakes on, which is what I'd like to do next.
What equipment will I use?
To take my images, I mainly will be using a Canon DSLR provided by school. This is my first photography project, so I think it will be fun to explore the different effects on this camera and see what looks best for my images. We are also allowed to use our phone cameras but that would usually be for our own images that we take at home. I hope I am given the opportunity of using a telescopic lens to zoom in and capture all the quality details and texture in an object. I intend to do lots of practice with photoshop using Adobe or Photopea and displaying all the steps on my Weebly website, to find these tutorials I will search for them using Youtube, I hope to use these applications effectively and bring out all the colours and lighting or blurring backgrounds using aperture in my photos as it is a vital skill to have in photography.
Timeline?
I have 4 months to complete my work and I aim to spend the first three weeks on research and next start taking my own photos so I am prepared and know what to capture. A place I think would be beneficial to capture images is on the Padley Gorge trip, as I like taking photos of nature/natural textures it is the perfect place. I aim to take a vast amount of images of flowers, mushrooms, fungi, trees, logs, bark, leaves and show all their different patterns. Afterwards, I will edit my images using photopea or photoshop using the resources and tools given and display my images on my Weebly website. I will show this by displaying the before and after images of photoshop and the tutorial I used step by step on my website.
How will I show my progression?
As my work progresses I plan on showing it all clearly. I will do this by annotating my galleries, what went well and what I need to improve on, if I am not sure what to include next time I can refer back to my Google Drive photography folder reading previous EBI's, or ask a peer what they think for some constructive criticism. I can easily find photoshop tutorials because my teacher has provided me with many links that will compliment and contrast my images. I aim to put all these links into a separate folder to be more organised and show a new sense of depth and vibrancy to them. I think photoshop can show progression and develop your own skills because you are proving you can work and refine on a certain part of an image and fix any small mistakes independently with a bit of research to help. In the end, I aim to choose my best images in a final photos gallery to clearly display my best work.
What I hope to learn:
In photography, I would like to progress my photo taking skills and make them look more professional and detailed. I want to consider effectively how I am angling my camera, what techniques I am going to use and understand why it will make it better. I do not know much about photoshop and how to manipulate images, I think this is a vital skill because it can really bring out the best features in an image, different colours and lighting can really help photos in my opinion. Another skill I hope to improve is independence because taking your own images and choosing what angles will look eye-catching on your photos shows you can work alone to improve and develop work effectively.
